Started in 2001, the Dot NAME generic TLD is the single TLD intended for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to book john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level names remained running.
